On June 24, the rotary drum sail manufactured by Zhongfu Lianzhong was successfully installed in the shipyard, marking the birth of the world's first bulk carrier with a stowaway diameter of 5 meters and a height of 35 meters, which is a leap step for the application of Marine wind boost rotary drum sail in actual ships
As a new propulsion device, the rotor sail can adjust the speed according to the wind direction at any time to make full use of the wind. Compared with the traditional sail, it occupies less deck space, is not affected by bad wind conditions, and has the most obvious effect on lateral wind.
Its energy saving principle comes from the Magnus effect, through which the engine generates a rotating rotor sail with friction, driving the surrounding gas to rotate together. When there is crosswind blowing, the air flow speed on one side of the air duct will be accelerated, and the flow speed on the other side will be slowed down. The faster the fluid flow speed is, the lower the pressure will be. The flow field around the rotating air duct will produce pressure difference, and then provide thrust for the ship to advance, so as to reduce fuel consumption, and become an important way of energy conservation and emission reduction in the shipping industry.
With strong technical ability and rich experience in the design and production of composite materials, Zhongfu Lianzhong cooperated closely with British technology companies and became the first domestic company to successfully develop the first set of international rotary drum sails,the cluster dry and wet laminations winding molding technology is adopted to realize the efficient preparation of large high-precision rotary drum sail with complex stress, and the development of high rotary drum sail with diameter of 5 meters and 35 meters is first completed.
It is worth mentioning that this technology has successfully passed the Jiangsu provincial appraisal in May 2023, which is the first at home and abroad. According to calculations, the application of this technology can achieve fuel savings of more than 15%, saving 642 tons of fuel and reducing carbon emissions by 2,058 tons for a single ship on a specific route.
At present, Zhongfu Lianzhong has built two production lines for mass production of rotor sails.
